"He's Gonna Step on You Again" (also known every bit "Step On") is a song originally performed by John Kongos, co-written past Kongos and Christos Demetriou, and beginning released in 1971 past Wing Records. Information technology entered the UK Singles Nautical chart on 22 May 1971 and spent 14 weeks there, peaking at No. 4.[1] Covers of the vocal have been chart successes several times, including for Happy Mondays in 1990.

It was cited in the Guinness Book of Records every bit beingness the first vocal to have used a sample.[2] Nonetheless, co-ordinate to the sleeve note of the CD reissue of the Kongos album, information technology is actually a tape loop of African drumming,[ii] and the employ of tape loops and instruments using prerecorded samples such as the Mellotron and Optigan was well established by this time.[ citation needed ]

English band Happy Mondays covered the vocal in 1990, retitling it "Step On", with two unlike music videos. It was originally intended every bit a contribution to the Rubáiyát: Elektra's 40th Anniversary compilation for their US characterization Elektra, just they decided to proceed it to release as a single, and instead covered Kongos's "Tokoloshe Human" for the compilation. The Happy Mondays version incorporates a brusk sample of iii guitar notes from the original.[xx]

"Pace On" became Happy Mondays' biggest-selling single, peaking at No. 5 in the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland and No. 57 on the US Billboard Hot 100 nautical chart. The repeated phrase in the song "you're twisting my melon, human" was afterward reused for the title of Shaun Ryder's autobiography Twisting My Melon.[21]
